Otaku Office
25 Jan 2012 | 9:47 amPhotos of another stylish otaku home office posted over at figure.fm - this time by Dieta from Germany. Great lighting in the room which has figures dotted all over the place but displayed with thought as not to make the place look cluttered. I want an office like this when I get a bigger place! One thing that Dieta does that I do is to try and light corners which tend to be dark to make the room feel a wee bit bigger. Having glass tables also has the same effect. I've left the original text by Dieta below each photo. My desk is on the right side. I’ve mounted 2 Ergotron LX arms on a 2×2… -

During the date, she explains a situation where she tells him that a boy confessed to her, and she was wondering why, and wondered if her larger bust might be the reason. She admits she has a complex over her large breasts and won’t be able to concentrate on her BL novels until she knows that boys won’t keep asking her out over them. So she smashes her boobs against Kinjiro to… -

Mayo Chiki! – Episode 11
23 Jan 2012 | 10:00 amIt’s the start of a new semester, and Kanade wastes no time starting her antics, putting a little wine into Subaru’s lunch, which apparently is enough to make her strip and do just about anything, and faking hiccups in a ploy to get Kinjiro and herself alone. However, later, while not paying attention Kanade falls down some stairs and injures her ankle. While Kanade doesn’t blame Subaru, Subaru’s father arrives to tell her that she’s being fired as a butler for allowing Kanade to get hurt. This angers Kanade, who vows to persuade her father to change his mind.

Blanc Et Noir – Obata Takeshi Art Book Review
14 Jan 2012 | 1:10 pmBlanc Et Noir is a huge and sumptuous illustration art book by Japanese manga artist Obata Takeshi of Death Note fame. Despite the title( White and Black ), almost all of the art work found in the book are vivid, full colored illustrations. Covering Obata’s portfolio from 2001-2006, about 1/3 of the book covers Death Note illustrations, and the remaining spread between Hikari No Go, Yoshitsune-Ki and other miscellaneous work. Many of the illustrations can be folded out to form a double page sized poster. ( below ) I don’t follow Obata’s work very closely, but I like his…

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly of 2011
4 Jan 2012 | 10:39 amLike most years, 2011 was a mixed bag, especially as far as watching anime and blogging goes. Spent much more time this year fiddling with tabletop RPG stuff. I still love anime and figures, which is why I can’t quite kill this blog, no matter how sad it gets. The Good On a personal front, something interesting happened to me. If you’re ever near Sydney, Australia, and find yourself at a Japanese restaurant called Sokyo (at The Star), head over to the bar and look up at the ceiling. It’s kind of hard to see the ceiling from the pics in the link (3rd and 6th slides), but if… -
Going Native Again: Trunk Girl and Shoujo-S (NSFW)
1 Nov 2011 | 3:39 pmI love Native. They extend the collection experience beyond most companies. Native doesn’t stop at the figure, at least with the three in my collection (Kotone, Shoujo-S, and Trunk Girl). Each of the figures came with an almost designer-like box. I didn’t take photos of the boxes, a) because it’s a pain and b) it might just look like a colored box in a tiny jpeg. Something about that little extra thought in the package design makes Native figures feel like “Special Collector’s Edition” stuff. The box is not just this thing protecting it in transit and then… -
Usagi Drop, A Fantasy
13 Oct 2011 | 3:42 pmDaikichi is a single, never married, thirty-something male who takes the responsibility of raising Rin, a five year old girl who was in the care of his grandfather who passed away. Nobody in the family wanted her, so Daikichi took responsibility. The setup of Usagi Drop sounds close to a Hallmark Hall of Fame type of thing, a family drama produced by a greeting card company. The premise is convoluted enough to move it a step away from standard family drama. Usagi Drop isn’t describing an emerging social trend or playing with nostalgia for a bygone age. Rin’s birth is unclear… -
Mikoto and Kuroko as Maids
11 Oct 2011 | 3:42 pmThe official character illustrations for Mikoto and Kuroko appeal to me due to a distinct art style, a little sharper, a little less soft, a bit more linear than cute girls get drawn. So yeah, I like the characters via the designs and the expressive images I’ve seen floating around. In much of the official looking art I see for this franchise, many of the images tell some kind of story, often with Kuruko as the instigator of something to funk up Mikoto. Kuroko seems awesome like that, at least, that’s what I’m going with based on random images I see. Before getting fetish… -
Rideback
4 Oct 2011 | 3:06 pmWorlds change in an instant, mused Rin Ogata as she danced on stage. She was a rising star in the ballet world, but when her ankle gives way it changes what she had thought would be the rest of her life, following her mother’s path of the prima ballerina. Now that the dream had slipped away, there was a void in her life; something was missing which left her aimless. An aimless existence carried over into college, where she resigned to coast through life. However one day when Rin was caught in the rain, she found something to love and gained purpose in her life. Rin found a rideback, a…

Brave10 parody episode 1
15 Jan 2012 | 2:24 pmWe begin in the middle of a raging fire at a shrine for reasons which will later become apparent. An obviously evil man stands and watches as a generic tries to protect a woman. Generic: Persona! Saki Mitama! No wait, Kusi Mitama! Oh, what’s the use, I’ll be dead by the opening credits! The credits run, and now our story can truly begin. Out hero, Saizou is lying motionless in a forest. (Saizou: Ah, this is so relaxing – and it saves on the animation budget too!) Unfortunately, he is soon disturbed when a woman, Isanami, looking rather the worse for wear, falls into his arms. -
It’s alive!
9 Jan 2012 | 1:41 pmGreetings all, I still don’t have my PhD, I’ve started a new job and just moved house…but I felt a sudden desire to review video games and so I’m bringing the blog back. I’ll be focussing more on games than anime this time around, because anime reviewing becoming a chore was one of the reasons I let this place go. Post on Fragile Dreams coming soon. -
So Long and Goodnight
27 Aug 2011 | 1:33 pmWhen I started my PhD three years ago, I ended up with a lot less time and energy for blogging. Nor could I spend hours each week keeping abreast of the latest anime and manga, reading and commenting on blogs, and generally staying in the loop. Real life had called, and contrary to form, I had to answer. Nonetheless, since I still liked writing and remained as opinionated as ever, I decided not to call it a day. Even if I could only blog once in a while, I would eventually get through the backlog- wouldn’t I? In the end, however, even this modest ambition proved untenable. Reviewing… -

20 Jan 2012 | 12:53 pmSorry for the long delay..so here's ..moved into a new apartment and I've been helping in efforts to fight back those terrible bills that could destroy the internet: SOPA, PIPA and maybe a new player, PCIP. As an anime retailer, I can safely say that piracy is an issue and does hurt sales but nothing like the MPAA, RIAA and others like to make you think is being lost in their content. More o this issue and hopefully some Tenshi-Oni updates soon as well.So..for now, enjoy this beautiful photo of Nadeko from the Bakemonogatari sequel, Nisemonogatari.oh and the Tenshi-Oni… -
Merry Anime Christmas From Kenneos
23 Dec 2011 | 12:48 pmKenneos, the artist who's doing much of the art for the Tenshi-Oni game, recently finished this great anime Christmas picture.Again, pardon the lack of updates and blog posts...there's of course been lots of anime and gaming news that I've been not mentioning but been busy with the anime figure business and work in general ^^;;No matter what holiday you celebrate or religion you have (or don't have) hope you have some time this weekend to sit back, relax and spend time thinking about something more important in life than work. -

FUNi Suspends Further DBZ BD Releases
27 Jan 2012 | 6:14 pmFUNimation has announced an indefinite hiatus on the continued release of Dragon Ball Z on Blu-ray. The “Level 2.1″ disc scheduled for release on March 27 will not be released. I suppose this is going to push the after-market value of the domestic Dragon… -

Senki Zessho Symphogear 04
28 Jan 2012 | 4:17 amNightmare Fuel much? Well, Symphogear continues to impress me with how far it will go towards being serious and gory. It’s only the fourth episode and one of the main leads has used up her final weapon and lies almost dead… and all she managed to do was to deal a pretty damaging blow towards the bad guy. Guess this should finally spur Hibiki in to actually taking shit seriously now that she’s the only Symphogear left. Though I’m not too sure how serious is she seeing this… HAAAAAA CHAAAAA ©2012 Kurogane's Anime Blog. All Rights Reserved.. -
Guilty Crown 14
27 Jan 2012 | 4:31 amWhoa shit, Shu acting pretty badass there. I’m not dreaming this entire episode am I? LOL wut. Oh man, this is getting pretty social commentary now isn’t it? But seriously, teh bloody fuck how they made that Genomic Resonance Counter thing and Tsugumi just had to conveniently pick it up from the terrorists last week who conveniently already have it somehow but no idea how the fuck to use and she conveniently manages to figure out the exact thing it was. They really have horrible composition skills. Man, I sure didn’t expect Haruka to join the dark side. She does know her own… -

23 Jan 2012 | 8:30 pmYeeaaaaaaaaaahhhhh that’s gonna be awkward. Ichika is just about as dense as Kaito… dense lead x dense heroine = ?? Guess we’ll have to see next week. And seriously Kaito, stop stomping on yourself so much with your own delusions. Even Rinon felt bad and tried to comfort you. Getting comforted by a UMA is like… I don’t know? Sad-funny? There was also a rather quick drama moment between Tetsurou and Mio, about him caring a bit too much for Kanna. This love polygon has really started going on early isn’t it? Also, damn. Remon has a huge e-penis camera. She…

Summary: Mei takes off her eyepatch and shows Kouichi that she has an artificial eye–or a “doll’s eye,” as she puts it. It can let her see that which should remain unseen, hence her reason for covering it. Mei puts her eyepatch back on and takes Kouichi back upstairs, where it’s not quite so creepy. Winter 2012 Anime Season: Back in the Saddle!?
15 Jan 2012 | 11:52 amI’ve taken some time out of my busy Skyrim playing schedule to watch a bunch of the 2012 Winter anime. So far I’ve seen High School DxD, Moretsu Pirates, Nisemonogatari, Papa no blah blah blah Ikinasai, Recorder and Little Kid, Kill Me Baby and Amagami SS+. Oh, and the one about the round cat. The last anime I watched in its entirety was Madoka, which I thought was pretty good, despite the annoying finish. I’d like to watch more new anime, but I also don’t want to get suckered into watching bad shows. If anyone has suggestions on last season’s series that were… -
Madoka Magica 10: Groundhog Day
11 Mar 2011 | 12:15 amRIP Mami... again After last week’s sorta meh episode, we get another Madoka of awesomeness! This time, we get to see how Homura came to be a mahou shoujo. Apparently in the original timeline, Mami and Madoka became partners (since Homura wasn’t there to delay Madoka becoming a Meguka, which probably led to a Madoka/Mami assist on the candy monster). They saved Homura and she became their magical girl toadie. The original Walpurgis Night giant witch thing ended up killing Mami and Madoka and Homura made a contract to go back in time to make things right, just like in Quantum Leap! -
Madoka Magica 8: Tastes Like Kyubei!
25 Feb 2011 | 12:03 amOMG. This was a great episode of Madoka Magica. Basically all of the speculation of the previous 7 episodes led up to the events of this one. If you don’t want to be spoiled, you should probably stop reading. First off, Kyubei is soooo evil! Or at the very least, very manipulative. It all makes sense now! Kyubei turns girls into witches, the girls hunt the witches and get energy but eventually lose it and become witches themselves. The witches kill humans to get energy and are killed by the magical girls. Kyubei profits!! Also, Kyubei eats his own corpse, probably to conserve energy. -
Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica Episode 7
18 Feb 2011 | 1:52 amJust finished watching the latest Madoka Magica. The series has definitely outdone my expectations (which were kind of low to begin with). This was a pretty good episode for character development. We get to learn why the spear girl is a loner and get confirmation that wishes really end up backfiring (or just evening things out). The whole apple biting thing kinda reminded me of Iron Chef’s Takeshi Kaga: In other news, it looks like Sayaka is mega pissed that she’s a zombie and can’t really be with her boyfriend. I wonder if being a shell of a human prevents her from that… -
Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica 5
6 Feb 2011 | 9:57 amSeku-hara! Alrighty, so that Sayaka girl made a wish and went through the magical girl commencement ceremony of a quick grope from Kyubey. Then she seems to act all high and mighty because her boyfriend got cured (but why not just ask for the whole shebang? Hello, he might want legs!) and she’s all super powerful and stuff. She really seems to be gloating at Madoka, so I hope she gets her downfall pretty soon. I wish for my boyfriend to be able to play Ave Maria with or without actually playing his violin! Oh, and there’s a new magical girl in town who wants to start stuff and…

Time Capsule: “Ai no Imi wo Oshiete!”

Don’t Let SOPA Stop Online Freedom
18 Jan 2012 | 11:06 amI don’t get the chance to talk about politics on the blog. Probably because this isn’t the place to discuss it, unless it was (wait for it) related to the subject of the blog and it was so outrageous that it has to be discussed. Well, it has nothing to do with anime at all… and it’s IS outrageous enough to talk about it, so please hold your protests until you read this. Interesting Find: Jang Geun Suk’s One Piece Mania
16 Jan 2012 | 3:20 pmNormally, Interesting Find is a series where I discuss the interesting Otaku merchandise I obtained that you would never expect to find laying on the shelf at your local anime store. With my warehouse a little cluttered right now to show anything else, and the lack of funds to buy anything else at the moment, here is something interesting that I found while watching a documentary of a South Korean celebrity. If you haven’t read it, the latest Ni-Ongaku Spotlight featured Korean actor Jang Geun Suk who is currently the top Hallyu star in Japan. In the post, I mentioned that Geun-chan was… -

Dragonball GT [Review]
15 Jan 2012 | 7:00 pmIt’s about time I got around to reviewing this, though I’m sure you, the reader, is saying there was no need to. Well, consider this another entry into the opinion pot of the “controversial” Dragonball GT. If you don’t know a lot about Dragonball GT already, I’ll tell you about it, but be warned: you may or may not like where it goes. Of course, you should read this review if you’ve watched Dragonball Z all the way to the end. Warning: This post contains spoilers and may be censored for your safety. [Anime] Quick Review on “Another” EP1
14 Jan 2012 | 11:52 amThis is my most anticipated new Anime. “Another” is written by Ayatsuju Yukito, a famous writer and directed by Mizushima Tsutomu (BLOOD-C). The main reason this series got my attention is because Ayatsuju is one of my favourite writer, but I soon noticed that illustrations are quite well in the Anime as well (By the way, I didn’t read the original novel of Another). As a quick review (and to avoid possible spoilers), I’ll focus on my feelings and include as little plot details as possible. Not only the story at the beginning sounds creepy to me, but also the setting:…

Given the nature of original creator Kinoko Nasu’s writing, few fans have risen to the occasion to translate the esoteric… -
Drunken Otaku: The Drops of God – First Sip
24 Jan 2012 | 5:30 pmEver have just a little too much to drink and, due to the kindness or mischief of friends, wake up in some other place than you remember being last? Well, I have to give a big thanks to Evan Minto here at Ani-Gamers for giving Drunken Otaku, a silly drinking-based anime blog I started during the Ani-Gamers lull, a new home as a regular column! You’ll still be exposed to the Great Drinkers (profiles), Great Moments in Drinking (more or less), and Beer Goggles (reviews) you may have come to love, but you’ll see them in a much more ... blue ... environment and… -

Ani-Gamers Welcomes David Estrella to Our Staff
19 Jan 2012 | 9:00 amIt's only been a couple weeks, but I'd say Ani-Gamers is already off to a pretty great start in our 2012 reboot. We have a couple of great posts in the pipeline, and today I'm proud to announce the newest member of our staff: David Estrella, an anime fan and game design student who reportedly overdosed on moé anime in late 2009 while seeking to understand the Mysteries of the Universe. He is now a shell of a man, eking out an existence by absorbing rays of pop culture and transforming them, via a perverse form of photosynthesis, into strings of words that may or may not be reviews on… -
Otakon 2011: "The Fine Print on the Contract" – A Madoka Magica Panel
14 Jan 2012 | 6:00 pmWe were out of the picture for a little while, so here is one of our articles from 2011 that we never got around to posting. Enjoy! One of the last panels of the Otakon weekend was the grandly named "The Fine Print on the Contract: the Themes, Philosophies, and Birth of a Legacy in Puella Magi Madoka Magica." I must admit to being fan of the series itself I was curious to see if such an ambitiously named panel could live up to my expectations. The panel was aimed squarely at people who had already seen the balance of the show and it pulled a very respectable crowd into its mid-sized…

Anime Review: 'The World God Only Knows'
25 Jan 2012 | 12:05 pmKeima Katsuragi's a lover of women -- but not real-world women. Rather, he's a serial seducer of the women he encounters in a peculiar subgenre of video game called "dating sims," where his score is based on how effectively he wins over a woman's heart....Read Full Post -
Anime Review: 'Kimi ni Todoke (From Me to You), Part 1'
19 Jan 2012 | 4:26 pmIt's never easy being the dark horse of the class. Sawako knows all too well what that's like -- she's such a dark horse that the other kids call her "Sadako", after the malevolent ghost in The Ring. So what's a girl to do when she's barely able to say hello -- and then finds herself befriended, almost by accident, by one of the most outgoing and popular boys in her class?...Read Full Post -

12 Jan 2012 | 5:46 amAll Tomoki wanted was a little peace and quiet ... and the occasional glimpse down the necklines of his female classmates (or a peek up their skirts). Then one day, the "Angeloid" named Ikaros quiet literally drops into his life. Nisemonogatari 03: An unhealthy relationship
27 Jan 2012 | 4:38 pmPlot progression in Nisemonogatari is a precious commodity – the show is so character driven that whenever it does move the plot along there’s usually a lot of weight behind it. Evil always operates in a blood red skyLoved the tense scene between Araragi and Kaiki, the Oshino-like fraud who was one of the five, who originally conned Senjougahara. The dark trees, heavy shadows and the foreboding redness of the whole scene was just beautiful. I don’t always love Shinbou’s design aesthetic (specifically I can almost always live without real life items being tossed into scenes here and… -
Nisemonogatari 02: It’s mostly porn
16 Jan 2012 | 11:43 pmI got around to thinking about Araragi’s life and what a sweet deal he has. That's what she saidAraragi has no male friends now that Oshino is out of the picture (questionable if you’d even consider Oshino a “friend” so much as another male figure on the show). His life consists of meeting his 5 attractive female friends one after another – actual “girlfriend” Senjougahara, has the hots for him Nadeko (whose voice I continue to adore), sporty exhibitionist Kanbaru, Jekyll/Hyde Catgirl Hanekawa and sharp tongued, maybe prime in another 10 years Hachikuji. When Araragi isn’t… -

15 Jan 2012 | 5:25 pmA potentially weird love story from student to teacher, a student to alien, and another student to the latter student. Weird, but still a better love story than Twilight. A pretty damn good show laced with quite a bit of fanservice. All in all, the point is, this show is great and it comes with fanservice. Nisemonogatari 01: Sexy angles, teases and conversational judo
9 Jan 2012 | 11:00 pmIn a lot of ways Bakemonogatari Nisemonogatari reminds me of Seinfeld – lots of entertaining, witty dialogue overshadowing the fact that not much actually happens in many of the episodes. Has Senjougahara been spending her time off checking out lolcats? But that’s sort of the draw of Nisemonogatari, no? You tune in to enjoy the banter between everyone and maybe you get a little seed of a story that’s planted. The –gatari series just brilliantly sucks you into a labyrinth of dialogue – which oftentimes doesn’t connect to the point of the episode at all (in this case,…

A few random updates on Animelo Summer Live 2011
22 Jan 2012 | 9:50 amA few random things came up long after returning from Japan to see Animelo Summer Live 2011. Firstly, sometimes you don’t realise that you’ve been somewhere that you’ve seen in a movie or anime until much later. In my case, I was reading the Wikipedia article on The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and realised that I had indeed been to the National Museum of Tokyo: Secondly, after hearing and meeting Minori Chihara and Chiaki Ishikawa at Animelo Summer Live 2011, it was intriguing to see that Minori Chihara’s forthcoming album, D-Formation has a track,… -

Fractale’s ED and Japan’s Nostalgic Drive Toward Irish Music
6 Jan 2012 | 5:19 pmToday’s guest post comes courtesy of TWWK over at Beneath the Tangles and I have to say that we’re in for an ethnomusicological treat. Now, ethnomusicology has always been an interesting area of study and I’m sorry to say that I just haven’t had the opportunity to dig into it further because it’s interesting to read up on how cultural exchanges transform music. TWWK’s entry delves into a cultural infusion, namely the one that brought Irish/Celtic music to Japan. It’s enlightening to get that understanding on why the Japanese took to this new style and… -

Hunter X Hunter – 15
26 Jan 2012 | 3:44 pmWith a solid strategy and tactic in hand, it’s time for Gon to go on the offensive and hunt down the baddest mofo on the island. That and sit in the bushes for a stupid amount of time until the right moment presents itself for Gon to strike. As for the rest of the crew, Leorio showcases his overall uselessness when it comes to being outwitted by the ever annoying Tonpa. I rag on Leorio a lot for being inadequate in the fighting department, but I really do like his character and how he melds with the rest of the group.Good thing Kurapika was watching over him out of sight all this time as… -
Hunter X Hunter – 14
26 Jan 2012 | 12:32 amStraight out of the gate this episode was fast. This entire bit took at least three episodes to complete in the original. That’s not even mentioning the fact the treasure hunting segment of the original was filler apparently, so that was completely scrapped also. So we practically breezed through five episodes already. What an improvement from the previous episode’s snail’s pace huh. Anyway, Gon did not have Lady Luck on his side when it came to picking out Hisoka’s number. Alas, it’s what makes for entertaining plot lines. With that the training begins, but I was already expecting… -
Hunter X Hunter – 12
25 Jan 2012 | 4:01 pmGuess what’s more boring than watching people actually being bored? Absolutely nothing, way to waste 15 minutes! In their attempt to show you what 50 hours feels like, Hunter X Hunter actually wastes our real life by dedicating a huge part of the episode to showing our gang doing nothing. I get it, it was a means of getting Tonpa to make Leorio feel guilty about losing the 50 hours in the first place. However as a show that paces itself well and cuts out all the fat, it sure is odd they decided to do what they did in this episode. But in the end, getting the hell out of this silly tower is… -
Hunter X Hunter – 11
25 Jan 2012 | 12:28 pmAnother episode of Hunter X Hunter and another round of mind games! Leorio’s lack of physical prowess is on stage again and how boring it is. I appreciate the effort in keeping the battles varied but rock-paper-scissors can only hold my attention for so long. The crazy amount of second guessing eventually gave way to wanting someone to get beaten into the ground instead. Luckily Killua came through with that request in the nick of time to save the episode from mediocrity.Killua’s little assassin step into casually removing his opponent’s heart was the turning point in which I realized… -
Hunter X Hunter – 10
16 Jan 2012 | 9:37 pmToning it down from Kurapika’s punch heard around the world, this week’s Hunter X Hunter goes back to the mind games. It wasn’t the most exciting episode; even for first timers it may have been pretty boring. I appreciated the effort in conveying the strong friendship and trust our gang already has now, but overall I wish they hurried it up a tad. It was a smart scenario of mind games between the two parties with Leorio’s medical skill and ballsy theatrics coming into play to win them a victory.Thank goodness for the break in the middle for Hisoka’s fight with super…

Kimi ni Mune Kyun! (plus a mini Winter Anime update!)
9 Jan 2012 | 7:01 amThere’s just something about the exam season where I always end up re-reading Eyeshield 21. Just finished reading my #1 favourite match this morning – Deimon vs. Shinryuuji!! The last 58 seconds of the match…!! @_@ This is not good for studying. But that’s not why I’m posting today. Last season, they sang ‘How to Go’ for Un-Go (I KNEW it… -

Ihara is cold, aloof and rude – but despite that, she is relentless and refuses to give up. Vibrantly coloured by all the moments they had together, it was the autumn their lives changed forever. The final chapter in Amano Shinobu’s tankōbon of one-shots, Natsu no Kakera. Both Chungky and I are so busy we had to collaborate. For a one-shot post. Life is sad. On the… -

Winter Preview 2012, Part 2
23 Jan 2012 | 11:00 pmThe second and final part of my 2012 Winter season preview. Here I review the first episodes of Nisemonogatari, Lagrange: The Flower of Rin-ne, Another, and Ano Natsu de Matteru. Nisemonogatari Picking up right where Bakemonogatari leaves off the show follows Koyomi Araragi as he deals with various supernatural phenomena. He also has to deal with his insane girlfriend, his sisters, and a cast of lovably crazy characters. Fans of Bakemonogatari rejoice! The long awaited sequel is here. Like the original, the animation and character designs are absolutely beautiful. There is a… -
Winter Preview 2012, Part 1
17 Jan 2012 | 10:37 pmIn this first part of my Winter Preview are the first impressions for Poyopoyo, Familiar of Zero F, Mouretsu Pirates, and Brave 10. Poyopoyo Moe Sato finds a cat and names him Poyo because of his round shape. The episodes are short pieces about Sato’s new life with her pet. Poyopoyo’s first episode was extremely quick and simply a set up for some of the jokes going forward. The show is about an adorable cat who is round, to the confusion of most of the cast and is really the chief gag of the series. This episode established that the cat does cat like things, and is cute while… -
Top 5 Anime of 2011
2 Jan 2012 | 9:34 pm2011 turned out to be an interesting year. It seems the moe craze is starting to dimmish a bit with a few notable failures; Yuru Yuri I'm looking in your direction; but overall 2011 turned into a pretty good, especially for Funimation with them pushing out two of the titles on this list on top of their exceptionally successful FLCL rerelease. The titles on my list paint 2011 as a year where Japan returned to attempt reaching a western audience, where an auteur director came of age, where artistic exploration reached a new pinnacle, where sweet and simple narratives play with our emotions, and… -
Review: Children Who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below
15 Dec 2011 | 10:51 pmMakoto Shinkai has been called the next Hayao Miyazaki, for good reason. In his newest work he creates an adventure narrative in the vain of the greatest of Miyazaki’s films, a departure from his extremely emotional love stories. By making a Ghibli-esuq film he is making a direct challenge to the master of Japanese animation but is it too early for him to be making such bold declarations or is this Shinkai clearly declaring his rightful place in the animation world? Asuna is a young girl who has been forced to mature early due to the loss of her father and the hectic schedule of her… -
Convention Report: New York Comic Con 2011
22 Nov 2011 | 5:24 pmIt's hard to say anything about New York Comic Con that hasn't already been said, or that isn't a repeat from what I talked about last year’s show. The event was definitely bigger than last year and the space was far better utilized than last year with them opening up the North Hall for the autograph area. Of course, this being Comic Con, even with the large show space the crowding was horrible. Building a multi-genre show has its positives and negatives but I fear that Comic Con may have finally crossed the line into being more of swap meet with a theater showing clips from upcoming…
